As educators of middle years learners, what professional learning opportunities do you believe prove to be the most effective?
Professional Development that enables staff to interact. An ideal outcome is to develop practical applications for specific settings. A concept theme could be 'wellbeing' threaded through curriculum or pastoral care. The model of training one staff member in PD to return to school and in-service others, loses the richness of interacting with fellow professionals, sharing ideas and expanding the knowledge pool. Sharing together places everybody in a similar mindset so that students receive a united message from staff.
Professional development of teams of people do enable a strong and consistent message to be implemented back in the school. The team needs a member of the leadership team, to give i authenticity as well as authority to bring change. Other members should include a range of teaching staff.
Professional development that targets change in groups of people is generally more effective, that isolated changes.
